PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to: as OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH SPECIALIST:

Conduct regular workplace inspections and hazard assessments.
Develop and deliver safety training programs and materials.
Investigate workplace incidents, near misses, and injuries to identify root causes and remedies.
Participate in and support the development of policies and procedures that promote occupational health and safety.
Collaborate with Facilities & Engineering, Human Resources, and department & organizational leadership to implement corrective and preventive measures.
Conduct ergonomic assessments as needed, providing recommendations to remedy and eliminate repetitive stress and other ergonomically induced workforce hazards. Collaborate with facilities to ensure ergonomic furniture needs are met in a timely fashion.
Provide oversight to Safety Committees, ensuring that they are appropriately staffed and that Safety Committee meetings are conducted as required.
Assist in support of workers' compensation management activities, including:
Coordinate with Human Resources and with supervisors of injured employees for return to work, with or without accommodation.
Collaborate with third-party support utilized for the administration of Bloodworks’ post-injury workers' compensation program.
Monitor correspondence from the Department. Of Labor & Industries, both in hard copy mail as well as LNI site-generated internal electronic mail. Respond accordingly to requests for information and or coordinate request completion with third-party support.
Monitor completion of other established activities that support a high-functioning safety culture. Examples include the coordination and hosting of quarterly executive safety walk-throughs at Bloodworks sites and the active promotion of safety topics at monthly employee meetings.
Track and follow up on corrective actions to ensure timely resolution.
Maintain compliance with OSHA, WISHA, Oregon OSHA, and other relevant regulations.
Monitor use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and recommend improvements.
Serve as a resource for employees with safety-related questions or concerns.
Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as written

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
In addition, 4 or more years of occupational safety & health oversight support experience.
Experience conducting inspections, training, and compliance assessments.
Healthcare or research environment experience (preferred)
Experience managing Safety Indicators or other electronic EHS systems (desirable)
Experience working with volunteers (desirable)
Needs assessment, training design, and presentation experience.
Experience building strong rapport and credibility with constituents as a forward-looking thought leader
Experience working with, coaching, and influencing individuals of all levels of authority
Current First Aid / CPR / AED CPR Certification (desirable)
Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician certification (desirable)
Professional certifications (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour, CSP, ASP) preferred.

To obtain access to some client facilities, the incumbent may be required to apply for and obtain clearance to access the client property. This clearance process may require the incumbent to undergo additional levels of screening beyond Bloodworks’ standard pre-employment screening.
Required mental activities involve continuous use of decision making, teamwork, creativity, customer service, discretion, problem analysis, interpersonal skills, mentoring, negotiations, reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension of English. Mental activities used frequently include performing math, presentations.
Required physical activities include frequent standing, walking, talking, reaching, feeling, hearing, handling, and repetitive motions of hands/wrists. Required physical activities used less frequently include stooping, sitting, bending, and repetitive motions of feet (all used occasionally); and kneeling, crawling, and climbing (all used rarely).
The ability to push, pull, and lift an average of 5-10 pounds throughout the day is required, as is the ability to carry an average of 5-10 pounds throughout the day.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Telecommuting, or virtual working, is the preferred primary working arrangement for this role. However, work on site at a Bloodworks location will be required from time to time, on a frequency basis that may vary depending upon the nature of the work being performed, as well as other factors.
Job conditions to be expected include extensive, close work with computer screens.
Position requires regular travel to Bloodworks sites, occasional extended hours, and meetings outside of weekday daytime working hours.
The incumbent will work with and provide supervision to volunteers.
As this is an essential position with direct responsibility to workforce members, the incumbent should be prepared to work extended and/or consecutive shifts and/or possibly at a different location during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies.
This position has indirect exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
