The Science Education Department at Seattle Children’s Research Institute is seeking an outgoing person with a passion for sharing science and educating young people to join our team as an Outreach Scientist. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as the person in this role will provide instruction to students on our 45 foot state-of-the art mobile laboratory at schools and in our dedicated student lab at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. The requirements are a Bachelor’s degree in a life science-related or equivalent field, and prior experience in a laboratory setting. Prior experience teaching or mentoring in an informal or formal setting is preferred. Training to become a certified driver for the mobile labs will be provided.
Responsible for providing high quality instruction to students, families and teachers virtually, and in-person on the Mobile Lab and at Seattle Children's Research Institute in order to increase awareness and interest in science, medicine and biomedical research.
Participate in design of new curricula and outreach activities. Incorporate principles of inclusivity and accessibility in all instruction and outreach activities.
Required Education and ExperienceBachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline or engineering.
Prior experience in a laboratory setting; may include experience from relevant educational programs that are not a traditional laboratory setting.
Per the driver's license requirements noted below, must have a driving record acceptable to Risk Management.
Required Credentials Current Washington State Driver’s License.
If assigned to drive the Science Adventure Lab/mobile lab, must have a Class B Commercial Driver's License or obtain within 90 days of start date or transfer.
PreferredPrior experience communicating science to students, peers or in a community setting.
Experience with research laboratory techniques.
Compensation Range
$29.16 - $43.73 per hour
Salary Information
This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year). Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided.
Seattle Children’s offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
